A great speaker should not change the sound of the recording; it should let all the music through like a transparent window. Bad-sounding recordings will sound worse than great-sounding recordings. The more difference you hear between your different CDs, the more accurately the speakers are reproducing the recordings. A good, transparent pair of speakers should paint a realistic soundstage in front of you, and you should be able to sit back and enjoy the sensation of your favourite artist playing for you in your own home. For the almost magical ability to have Billie Holiday, or Jascha Heifetz, or John Lennon, perform for you at a moment's notice is well worth the extra effort it takes to get the right speakers, and the right system…..
